“Thank you for committing to this 30 Day Christian Green Living Challenge with us! Each day as we step through our journey, I’ll share the challenge for the day then, depending on your green goals, I will share resources where you can learn more, dig deeper into the topic, or challenge yourself even more. We will do the challenge once *live* together, but you can participate anytime by joining in on the comments below and by using the hashtag #ChristianGreenLiving. So, when you’re ready, let’s Go Christian Green!
We talked a lot about plastic on day 3 of our challenge when we committed to using our reusable shopping bags. Today we want to go a step further and give up another type of popular plastic — food storage plastic (plastic wrap) and zip top baggies.
According to their article, “Single-Use Plastic Bag Facts,” the Center for Biological Diversity tells us that Americans use 100 billion single-use each year and it takes 12 million barrels of oil to produce them. Plus, if they were able to break down in the landfill (which they can’t), it would take 500 years. Wow, these are very disturbing facts!
Our responsibility to creation needs to look past the convenience of all one-time use plastics and we as Christians need to lead the way. Can you imagine if all 173 million Christians in the US stopped using one-time use plastics? The world would change into a much greener place!
Today’s Day 26 Challenge:
Do you use plastic wrap and zip top baggies often? Have you ever thought about how many zip top bags and yards of plastic wrap are thrown away each day? The numbers are staggering. Do you already use good alternatives regularly?
In our prayers let’s pray for ourselves and people around the world who consume disposable plastics without discernment. Let’s ask God to be with us, enlighten us and help us to use the gift of knowledge to direct all of our actions to giving glory to God.
Consider your family’s use of plastic wrap and zip top baggies. Challenge yourself to completely give up them for the remainder of the challenge. If you don’t already have good alternatives, seek them out and try to avoid buying more plastic if you can.
Do you really love plastic wrap and find it hard to give up zip top bags or do you already have awesome solutions that work well for your family? Share your thoughts by commenting below and/or using the hashtag #ChristianGreenLiving.
