If you live in an area like me where the seasons change and take us from hot, to cold, to rain to snow (sometimes all in one week) having clothes suitable for the weather is a must. But, how do we manage our closet, our budget, and still remain eco-friendly? As a mom with three growing boys of my own, I know, the struggle is real. That’s why I’ve been considering the benefits of buying gently used clothing through online consignment sites.
Online consignment shops are a huge thing right now. People around the world are discovering the benefits of buying quality secondhand clothing for the whole family.

It’s a More Eco-friendly Option
Before I began exploring more sustainable ways of living, I was unaware of just how much waste occurs in the fashion industry at large. We live in a world where we’re constantly buying new clothing and keeping it for less time than ever before. Online consignment sites offer a way to turn someones’ twice-worn sweater into a beloved item in your own closet instead of the landfill.
It’s Easier On Your Wallet
Whether your tastes apply to designer fashion or on the more conservative side of the budget spectrum, an online consignment site exists out there for you. Furthermore, it’s going to be much more inexpensive than buying brand-new. With the holiday shopping season just around the corner, this is an excellent greener gift option.
1. Best Overall Online Consignment: ThredUp
Why I’ll Shop with ThredUp Again
- They have tons of gently used (and some new with tags) clothes for the whole family. I bought ‘wear it to work’ clothes in some of my favorite brands including tops, sweaters, and dress pants. I mostly shopped the brands I knew would fit me but you can make returns if you need to.
- My order arrived fast, or at least as fast as other online orders. Mine came in less than a week.
- GREEN-er. Shopping online isn’t ideal, but it makes second-hand shopping easier. I can find my size and favorite stores without driving all over the place.
(If I forget to update this after 12/1/2020 – drop me an email in case they give me a new code when you’re ready to shop.)

2. Best for Online Consignment for Kids: Kidizen
If you’re searching specifically for kids’ online consignment sites, Kidizen should be at the top of your list. You can find thousands of hugely discounted, like-new clothing items for every child in your household from brands you love like Gymboree, Carters, Cat and Jack, and The Children’s Place.
The great news is you can also sign up to be a seller to sell your family’s gently used clothing. As a member of their “Seller Corner,” you will find a community platform where mothers can connect with one another to provide support and advice. There is something comforting in this mission of cooperative experience, especially in a society where we’re often isolated from one another in so many ways.
I haven’t bought from Kidizen yet, BUT I will say, the shopping experience at Kidizen is amazing! The website is beautiful making it feel like you’re shopping from a specialty kids boutique!

3. Best Online Consignment Option for Men: Swap.com
Most online consignment sites are geared towards women and children but there are online options for men too. Swap.com is a surprisingly affordable and eco-friendly option for men to find a large variety of clothing including outerwear, suiting, casual clothes, and more, which makes them our favorite online consignment site for men. Specialty sizes are also available.
I know I listed this as the ‘Best Option for Men’ primarily because I didn’t want to leave them out, BUT I love it for women’s and children’s clothing as well. I ordered from Swap the same day as I ordered from ThredUp to compare the two consignment shops. THEY BOTH ARE GREAT.
I found more clothes at ThredUp but my experience at Swap was just as good and my order arrived a couple of days sooner. I was able to find a couple of brand named tops for my youngest son (Adidas and Under Armour) from Swap that arrived looking brand new and he loves them.

MY FAVORITE? This is how my first order from ThredUp arrived. Simple packaging but cute!

I will admit that I have indulged in ‘retail therapy’ in the past and have purchased plenty of brand-spanking-new clothing items for every member of my family. However, I am happy to find that we can get that same thrill when finding fantastic deals from online consignment sites, without the guilt!
